UK Domiciled funds

Funds under management 
Funds under management of UK domiciled investment funds were £391.3 billion in May 2009. This was up 4% on the previous month and down by 14% on May 2008. UK domiciled ISA funds under management of £76.5 billion were 3% up on the previous month and 19% down on the previous year.

ISA sales   
As of April 2008 PEPs were merged into stocks and shares ISAs.  For comparison purposes, IMA ISA data for periods prior to April 2008 will combine PEPs and ISAs. This will apply to both UK and Overseas domiciled fund statistics.

UK domiciled investment fund ISAs saw a net inflow of £312.4 million in May 2009, compared to the previous month's inflow of £672.4 million and the previous year's outflow of £214.8 million.

The most popular UK domiciled ISA sector in May 2009 in gross and net terms was Cautious Managed.  The Cautious Managed sector accounted for 20% of gross ISA sales.

UK domiciled net sales by asset class
Of the £2.8 billion net retail sales, £1.3 billion went into bond funds and £984 million into equity funds. Institutional holdings of unit trusts and OEICs saw an inflow of £1.0 billion, half of which went into equities and most of the balance into bond funds.

Gross retail sales by sector and distribution channel
The most popular sector in May 2009 was £ Corporate Bond, accounting for 15% of gross retail sales of UK domiciled funds. 90% of gross retail sales into the £ Corporate Bond sector were via the intermediary channel.

The most popular distribution channel for UK domiciled funds in May 2009 was the intermediary channel, representing 87% of gross retail business. Gross ISA sales were £810 million, with £355 million sold through fund supermarkets followed by £218 million through sales force/tied agents.

Best selling sector for UK domiciled funds

The £ Corporate Bond was the most popular UK domiciled net retail sector, for the seventh month in a row, with an inflow of £717.9 million.  The sector with the biggest outflows in May was Unclassified with a net outflow of £66.6 million.

OVERSEAS FUNDS

Overseas funds under management of £17.5 billion in May 2009 were up 3% on the previous month and broadly the same as the previous year's £17.4 billion. Overseas ISA assets of £297 million were up 13% on the previous month and down 15% on the previous year.

Net retail sales of overseas domiciled funds in May 2009 saw an inflow of £136.4 million, compared to the previous month's inflow of £168.6 million and £154.5 million seen the previous year. Net retail sales of overseas domiciled investment fund ISAs saw an inflow of £1.7 million in May 2009, compared to an inflow of £2.8 million the previous month and an outflow of £0.1 million in May 2008.

Summary of overseas domiciled funds - FUM and sales   Richard Saunders, Chief Executive of the IMA commented:

"Retail and ISA sales continue to see strong inflows, with May's figures recording the highest net retail sales outside an ISA season since records began. The last six months alone have seen net retail sales of £10.6 billion. This is much higher than the same period a year ago when net retail sales were just £1.9 billion."
