management of £38 billion also saw a rise of 1% from
December and increased by 20% on the previous year.
Net retail sales in January were £169.7

2004. An outflow from the institutional sector meant that
total net sales were negative to the tune of £135 million.
Net ISA sales fell for the first time
in four months to £38.9 million, down 58% from December 2004
and 79% from January 2004.
The most popular sector in January was
UK All Companies, accounting for 23% of gross retail
investment into unit trusts and OEICs, followed by UK Equity
Income (17%) and UK Corporate Bond (9%).
The trends in distribution continued in
January with intermediaries responsible for 78% of gross
retail sales of investment funds, whilst investment fund
ISAs continued to be sold predominantly by the sales
force/tied agent channel, accounting for 45% of gross ISA
sales.
Richard Saunders, Chief Executive of
the IMA commented:
“2005 has
started slowly with little new money flowing into investment
funds and investment fund ISAs. This is in spite of
continuing stock market improvement, which has seen the FTSE
100 index increase by some 50 per cent in the last two
years.”
