INVESTMENT FUND STATISTICS

May 2004

  •  Investment funds under management £247 billion

  • Gross industry sales £4.3 billion (May 2003 £3.4 billion)

  • Gross retail sales £2.3 billion (May 2003 £2.2 billion)

  • Gross ISA sales £436 million (May 2003 £495 million)

Investment funds under management in May saw an 18% increase from the previous year, but fell by 2% from April. ISA funds under management also fell from the previous month to £33.1 billion but increased by 25% from May 2003.

Total net sales in May were up 21% on the year and 50% from April. This increase was largely due to net institutional inflows, with net retail sales of £126 million significantly down on both the month and the year (down 84% and 83% respectively).

Net ISA sales also fell to £167 million, 51% lower than May 2003 and down from £587 million the previous month.

The most popular sectors in May were the UK All Companies sector accounting for 22% of gross retail sales, 53% of which were sold through intermediaries. This was followed by UK Corporate Bonds (13%), with sales force/tied agents distributing 50% of these sales.

Once again intermediaries were responsible for the largest proportion of gross retail investment fund sales (68%) whilst ISAs were mainly sold through sales force/tied agents (43%).

Richard Saunders, Chief Executive of the IMA commented:

“Significantly increased redemptions in May pushed net retail investment to its lowest level since September 2002. The next few months will tell whether this marks a departure from the previous trend.”
