INVESTMENT FUND STATISTICS

 April 2004

  • Investment funds under management £248 billion

  • Gross industry sales £4.7 billion (April 2003 £4.6 billion)

  • Gross retail sales £3 billion (April 2003 £2.6 billion)

  • Gross ISA sales £843 million (April 2003 £813 million)

Investment funds under management saw an increase of 1% in April to £248 billion and were up 24% from the previous year. ISA funds under management also continued to grow to £33.6 billion, a 34% increase on April 2003.

Net retail sales of £702 million were down by 17% from March and by 33% from the £1 billion seen the previous year. Net ISA sales in April were 19% higher than in March, but were down 14% from April 2003. Net ISA sales for March and April 2004 were £1,082 million compared to £1,092 million the previous year.

The most popular sector in April was UK All Companies for the seventh consecutive month, accounting for 25% of gross retail sales. This was followed by UK Corporate Bonds (13%) and UK Equity Income (11%).

Intermediaries were responsible for more than two thirds of gross retail investment into unit trusts and OEICs (70%), followed by sales force/tied agents which accounted for 14%. Sales force/tied agents were again the most popular distributor of ISAs, with a share of 38% of gross ISA sales, closely followed by intermediaries with 31% and direct sales with 30%.

Richard Saunders, Chief Executive of the IMA commented:

“The combined numbers for March and April indicate that the 2004 ISA season was broadly inline with last year. This suggests that fears for the future of ISAs were broadly offset by the more buoyant demand from investors that we have been seeing over the last few quarters.”
