billion
-
Gross Industry Sales £4.3 billion (June 2002
£3.9 billion)
-
Gross Retail Sales £2.5 billion (June 2002
£2.3 billion)
-
Gross ISA sales £435 million (June 2002 £429
million)
June saw an
increase in investment fund sales compared to both May 2003
and June 2002. Overall
gross sales rose to £4.3 billion, up from £3.4 billion in
May and £3.9 billion from the previous June.
Net industry sales reached £1.5 billion, increasing
69% on May 2003, and more than 150% on June 2002.
Net retail sales rose to £918 million – a 45%
increase on the year and 24% on the month.
Net ISA sales
however were £294 million, a drop of 14% on May this year,
and down 2% year on year.
Overall, 67% of
June’s retail investment (£1,636 million) came through the
intermediary channel, 20% through tied agent sales forces, and
9% direct from the public.
5% was from private clients.
Despite
an overall positive picture in investment fund sales, the
second quarter of 2003 saw the number of regular savings plans
fall (from 1,887,905
in the first
quarter to 1,798,125)
as did the amount of money being placed into them (from £464.1 million in
first quarter to £428.1 million)
– this continues a trend started at the beginning of 2002.
Clare Arber, Head
of Communications at the IMA, said:
“While
one must be wary of reading too much into one month’s
figures, it is encouraging to see the first year-on-year
increase in net retail sales since October 2002.
This follows some three months when the decline in
sales has seemed to be levelling off. We may not however see investors returning to the stock
market on the scale of earlier years until a prolonged
recovery takes place.”
