INVESTMENT FUND STATISTICS

May 2003

  • Investment Funds Under Management £210 billion

  • Gross Industry Sales £3.4 billion (May 2002 £4.3 billion)

  • Gross Retail Sales £2.2 billion (May 2002 £2.7 billion)

Investment funds under management in May increased to £210 billion, the highest level since June 2002. Net industry sales were £860 million, compared with £1 billion in May 2002. Net retail sales were £742 million, down 11% on last May while net ISA sales of £357 million fell 22% from the previous year. At £26.5 billion, ISA funds under management now stand at their highest level since their introduction in 1999.

Gross industry sales in May of £3.4 billion were down £850 million from May 2002. Gross retail sales were £2.2 billion, down 18% from the previous year.

Continuing the trend seen in previous months, the most popular retail sectors in May 2003 were UK Corporate Bonds, with sales of £593 million, and UK All Companies, £442 million, accounting for 27% and 20% respectively of total gross retail sales.

Intermediaries continued to be the most popular distribution channel for retail gross sales in May with 63% of sales coming via this channel.

Richard Saunders, Chief Executive of the IMA commented:

“With the recent recovery in the market, total ISA funds under management have reached an all time high.  May’s figures continue the trend of recent months, with net sales running behind this time last year, but by much less than was the case in January this year. Corporate bond funds continue to be the most popular with retail investors, as they have been for the last year.”
