ETHICAL INVESTMENT

A guide to ethical and socially responsible investment funds

Many investors nowadays want to be sure their money is supporting only those types of business activities of which they approve – whether avoiding particular industries or investing in companies following the best environmental practices.

This updated IMA fact sheet explains that there is a choice when investing for those that have concerns.  It helps you learn more about ethical funds – how to identify what you want from your investment, how to choose the right ethical fund and how to understand the difference between positive and negative screening criteria.

It shows that investing ethically does not necessarily lead to poor performance, that you don’t have to pay a price for your principles.  Saving £50 a month in the average UK Ethical fund over the last 15 years, for example, would have delivered a total sum of £13,505, compared to £13,380 in the average UK All Companies fund and £11,847 in the average Global Growth fund[1].

Richard Saunders, IMA Chief Executive, said:

“Many investors are keenly interested in socially responsible investing.  The fund management industry has responded positively to that interest by developing a wide range of products.  This fact sheet will help socially responsible investors understand the options now available to them.”
