 INVESTMENT FUND STATISTICS
November 2002

  • Investment funds under management £203 billion

  • Gross industry sales £3.4 billion (Nov 2001 £4.1 billion)

  • Gross retail sales £2 billion (Nov 2001 £2.2 billion)

  • Gross ISA sales £368 million (Nov 2001 £391 million)

Net retail sales increased to £493 million from £453 million in October (November 2001 £612 million), with investment fund ISA net sales slowing to £224 million from £238 million in October.

Almost two thirds (64%) of gross retail sales were made through intermediaries whilst sales forces/tied agents accounted for 21%.  Only 11% were made without any advice and invested ‘direct’.  Private investors were responsible for 85% of all sales of UK Corporate Bond funds, with £452 million invested during November.  Sales forces and tied agents were responsible for over half (58%) of retail sales in this sector.

Two management companies were responsible for withdrawing over £1.5 billion of institutional investment between them.  This had a significant impact on total industry sales for the month, resulting in a net fund outflow of almost £1 billion in November.

Clare Arber, Head of Communications at the IMA, commented:

“Net retail inflows once again reached half billion pounds - a level, September excepted, that has been maintained since Spring.  Corporate bond funds remain popular with private investors and contributed the lion’s share of net retail investment for the seventh month running.

“Investors should remember to consider their overall financial objectives, personal circumstances and attitude to risk, and then choose a fund accordingly.  Whatever the current investing trends, consumers should ensure that investments complement the rest of their portfolio.”
