INVESTMENT FUND STATISTICS
OCTOBER 2001
-
Investment
funds under management - £223 billion
-
Gross
industry sales down 3% to £4.3 billion (£4.4 billion –
October 2000)
-
Gross
retail sales down by 35% to £1.9 billion (£2.9 billion –
October 2000)
-
Gross
ISA sales down by 45% to £385 million (£670 million –
October 2000)
Investment funds under management rallied as stockmarkets across the
world recovered from the events of 11th September.
Business flows also picked up, with increased activity across
the board. Gross sales
of £4.3 billion increased by 57% on September’s £2.7 billion,
whilst total net sales rose by £684 million to £776 million.
Retail sales in October also improved with gross sales of £1.9
billion (£1.6 billion in September).
Repurchases also rose from £1.5 billion to £1.7 billion,
leaving net retail sales of £247 million (September £47 million).
Net sales
of unit trust and OEIC ISAs at £286 million were less than half
those for October 2000 (£633 million).
However, at £99 million, ISA repurchases were significantly
lower than September’s £140 million.
Sales forces and tied agents were responsible for 42% of ISA
business, whilst IFAs accounted for 33%.
25% of investment fund ISAs were bought ‘direct’.
Clare
Arber, Head of Communications at AUTIF, commented:
“Private investors made a slow but
positive return to investment funds in October.
Bond fund sectors continue to be the most popular choice
for new fund investment; on a net basis, only two out of the top
six sectors are equity based.
“As with recent months, this marks
a change in the UK retail investor’s traditional bias towards
equity investment. We
shall watch with interest to see if this trend is a long term
shift or a short term reflection of the current uncertain
climate.”
