REGULAR SAVINGS PLANS RETURN TO PRE-ISA LEVELS

  • Record regular savings inflows - £516m for Quarter 3

  • Investment funds under management - £270 billion

  • Gross sales of £4.8bn – 47% increase on September 1999

Regular savings plans recorded their best ever sales this quarter, restoring volumes to pre-ISA levels. More than £516m was invested in two million plans during July, August and September. Of this figure, £448m was invested through individual savings accounts, accounting for 22% of all ISA sales for the same period.

Total unit trust and OEIC sales overall reached £4.8bn in September, an increase of 47% on the same period last year. Funds under management dropped by £10bn to £270bn, due in part to falls in world stockmarkets. Sales of individual savings accounts rose to £682m, higher than the corresponding PEP sales of £660m in September 1998.

Over £172m, 6% of all retail fund sales, went into technology funds, however only 1% of institutional sales went to this area of the market. Some £148m, 5% of all retail sales went into passive funds. Again institutional business into trackers was less, accounting for some 3% of institutional sales.

Clare Arber, PR Manager at AUTIF, commented:

"It’s good to see regular savings plans back on track, it’s just a pity it has taken so long. The hand-over from PEPs to ISAs undoubtedly dented the savings momentum. Yet for novice investors or those of us not lucky enough to have a lump sum to invest, a monthly savings plan is the wise route into the stockmarket and effective long term savings."
